Development :: Mobile Development :: QR Codes

Barcodes are now a ubiquitous feature of everyday life. They appear on everything that we buy, from digital TVs to packets of crisps, designed to contain the pricing information that can be read by automatic readers to speed up sales processing. We now just take them for granted, but thirty years ago, no-one would have known what to do with a barcode.

In the UK today we're at a similar stage with two-dimensional 2D barcodes. These have been around for a few years but are not yet in mainstream commercial use, the most commonly used barcodes today are QR (Quick Response) Codes.

These QR Codes look like a square filled with a series of 'random' dots - an example appears at the top of this page. Some are in colour, and some even have visible images within the dots, such as logos or pictures. The advertising possibilities of QR codes have been recognised by Japanese companies for some time. These 2D barcodes can hold a mine of information that can be picked up and read easily by QR Code enabled mobile phones - which come as standard in Japan.

Some predict that within a few years we will be taking them for granted just as we do current barcodes. A mobile phone is no longer just that, it is now often an mp3 player, personal organiser, camera, Internet browser, and a remote control device with which to interact with QR Codes in our environment.

QR Codes in action

QR Code™If you would like to see a live working example of one of our latest mobile solutions (Radisson Edwardian) directly on your handset then simply scan the QR Code opposite.

Alternatively, if your mobile phone does not have a reader installed, you can enter your mobile number (do not use spaces) into the box below and press the submit button. We will ten send a SMS message with a link to the Radisson Edwardian mobile site - this is a FREE service. Your mobile number will not be stored or used for other marketing purposes.

This technology, and the opportunities it offers, is spreading, and is already starting to appear in the UK. Understanding how a QR Code can be used to advertise your company, promote your brand, and give information about your products and services is simple.

Brand Attention are watching developments carefully and are able to offer this technology to our clients as part of a wider brand awareness campaign.
